About The Community

Inangahua New Zealand

The Inangahua community is currently a self service community, with only residences, a Fire Station and the Hall. Relying on each other for support as the nearest town is Reefton. We look out for each other and fill in the gaps.

Our Community Hall is a focal point for our community, providing a gathering place for events and meetings. Whilst it is owned by the Buller District Council, much of the management falls to the subcommittee and other local volunteers. We are happy to do it as maintaining our community spaces is maintaining our community connection.

The importance of the Hall cannot be overstated, we run market days, community dinners, craft days, birthdays and so much more from the Hall. For many it is a welcoming shared space and we love that we can provide that for the community.

Chairperson

Yvonne Hammond

I followed my family to Inangahua. I am mother, grandmother and also daughter! I have been a flax weaver/ kai mahi raranga for more than 40 years. I use traditional craft methods to create contemporary artworks. I also teach flax weaving.  This is blended with my interests in community, environmental protection, natural cycles and the way it is all connected.

Originally from the North Island I purchased land in the Buller Gorge over 20 years ago with the dream of retiring here one day.

The more time I spent here, the more I didn't want to leave.

It's the air

It's the people

It's the bush

It's the Birdlife

It's the freedom. . . That's makes me love this place and want to call it home.
